Sony Research India and Goa University Partnership to Establish Advanced Artificial Intelligence (AAI / आई) Laboratory on Campus

Goa, India – 14th August 2025

Sony Research India and Goa University have embarked on a pioneering research collaboration with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 14th August 2025 to establish the Advanced Artificial Intelligence (AAI) Laboratory on the Goa University campus, the first industry-supported lab of its kind at the Goa University. The AAI will be housed at the Goa University Research Park Unit (GURU). Goa University established GURU with the support of the Directorate of Higher Education, Government of Goa.

The MoU between Sony Research India and Goa University marks a significant milestone being formalized in the presence of Dr. Pankaj Wasnik (Director – T&D) and Mr. Arithy MV (Manager – Strategy & Partnerships) from Sony Research India, along with Goa University dignitaries Prof. Harilal Menon (Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor), Prof. Sundar Dhuri (Registrar), Prof. Ramesh Pai (Dean, School of Physical and Sciences (SPAS)), Prof. Sanjeev Ghadi (Director, Research Development & Resource Mobilization (RDRM)), Prof. Sandeep Garg (Directorate of Internship Incubation and Industry Partnership (DI3P)), Ms. Bertha D’Mello (Deputy Registrar) and the  Principal Investigators lead by Dr. Narayan Vetrekar and Prof. Rajendra Gad.

This is a new participation agreement granted by Sony Research India to sponsor and support the Laboratory in Artificial Intelligence along with fellowship programme to carry out cutting-edge research. The research initiatives will focus on Advanced Artificial Intelligence for multimodal data, aiming to foster a supportive environment where researchers can pursue cutting-edge AI research, generate large-scale high-quality datasets, and empower emerging scholars to advance the field. The program will also strengthen capacity in research, training, and outreach through hands-on workshops, seminars, and other educational activities. Additionally, researchers from Sony Research India will be invited to collaborate in joint research projects, deliver guest lectures, and provide guidance on state-of-the-art AI research to support AAI’s initiatives.

This landmark engagement between Sony Research India and Goa University aims to strengthen research innovation and skill development in artificial intelligence and allied domains in the long term at Goa University.
